Why I Chose a Single Engine for the Great Loop

One of the most common questions I get from viewers planning the Great Loop is whether a single-engine boat is enough — or if twins are the safer choice.

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. What matters is how well your boat matches your experience, your budget, and your willingness to learn your systems.

For me, choosing a single engine came down to simplicity, cost, and confidence. Fewer systems mean fewer failure points, easier maintenance, and better fuel efficiency over thousands of miles. But simplicity doesn’t mean ignoring safety.

Redundancy doesn’t only come from engine count — it comes from understanding your boat, planning backup systems, and knowing how to respond when something goes wrong.

This channel exists to show that the Great Loop doesn’t require a perfect or expensive boat. It requires preparation, realistic decisions, and the confidence that comes from knowing your setup.

If you’re planning the Loop, take the time to evaluate what works for you — not just what’s considered “standard.”
